"Foreign media must follow the same practice as other Asian countries, where the family name comes first, followed by the first name," Kono said in a press statement. "Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe must write on behalf of Abe Shinzo ".

Kono proposed that change be introduced at the G20 summit, to be held in Osaka in late June, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.

"I plan to ask international media organizations to do this," he said, adding that "local media that provide services in English should also consider adopting change."
